Officially the Costa Brava stretches from the French border down the Mediterranean coast as far a Blanes. It is nicknamed the 'wild coast' there is approximately 135 miles of mainly pine clad coastline with some fine sandy bays. Although it has been in use by British holiday makers since the 1960's the northern end still retains much of it's original charm. Sunny with steep cliffs and rocky coves, hosting a wide array of water sports, there are also some marvelous Roman ruins and peaceful fishing villages if it's restful seclusion that you want.
The traditional fishing port, Sant Feliu de Guixols has beautiful architecture and good restaurants and with tapas bars and restaurants dotted along the coastline, you'll never have to worry about where to eat. the Costa Brava is full of bustling resorts, fantastic beaches and fun-filled entertainment.
There really is something for everyone and all tastes are catered for. Weekly markets play an important part of both the local economies and the numerous holidaymakers who visit the area. Leather, leather clothes, shoes, belts, bags or watch straps can be an excellent buy, and all the main tourist resorts such as Lloret, Blanes and Barcelona are a shoppers dream with their boutiques and traditional souvenir shops. The main airport lies 9 miles south west of the town of Gerona.
Excellent Local Food
at reasonable prices make this one of the best tourist areas in Spain for a great holiday. The local beers are as good as you'll find anywhere in the world, and the variety of food on offer is excellent ranging from fast food, such as McDonalds and Burger king to international cuisine in various restaurants, Tapas bars and Catalonian cuisine.
Catalonian food specialises in fresh ingredients from the sea. Why not try 'Sarsuela' a spicy stew or some sea food in'Paella', another of the local delicacies. For something sweet, there is 'Crema' a dish similar to creme caramel. Dining out is very much part of the nightlife here, with meals stretching in to the evening in true Mediterranean style, and with over 2,500 restaurants throughout the Costa Brava, holidaymakers will be spoilt for choice with the combination and quality of food on offer.
The Costa Brava is just full of wine houses, and produce 6.2 million litres of wine annually. It was here that the British were introduced to 'Sangria', a refreshing drink made from lemonade, wine, brandy and fruit and it is still a firm favorite with them today.
